Mory Alvarez was born in Havana, Cuba. Her early childhood was immersed in a musical family where she began to play piano and guitar at the early age of four. In 1962, she migrated to
New Orleans. In 1975, she obtained a BA in Music/Music Therapy from Loyola University and
moved to Santa Barbara California to pursue a career in Music Therapy. Growing up in Afro-Cuban rhythms blended with the rich soup of diverse ethnic sounds of New Orleans, “ the melting pot” has shaped her eclectic interest in music. While in Santa Barbara, she has been involved in a variety of music experiences involving different genres in a variety of venues such as Choir Director at Holy Cross Church, played bass and percussion in Jazz in Progress at San Ysidro Ranch, member of A Joyful Noise –Multi -Cultural drumming & vocal group, taught Multi-Cultural Spiritual Drumming at UUSB, Director of Djembelaya Multi -Cultural drumming & vocal group, and finally performing and recording with The Stone Phoneys as bass, percussion and background vocals.
